TOKYO (Reuters) – Markets edged down on Tuesday as Greek resistance to the strict conditions attached to a bailout fund sapped recent momentum spurred by hopes the global economy is improving, and the euro eased on renewed fears of a messy debt default.

The Australian dollar leapt to a six-month high but stocks turned negative after the central bank held rates steady at a review. Markets had positioned for a rate cut.

Opinion remained split over whether the wrangling over Greece’s debt restructuring talks would eventually be resolved or trigger contagion across other vulnerable euro zone countries, tempering risk-taking investments.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose as much as 0.4 percent to its highest in more than five months, before reversing direction to stand down 0.2 percent.

Japan’s Nikkei average fell 0.3 percent, slipping from a three-month high just shy of 9,000 hit on Monday.

“Concerns over the Greece issue are limiting real risk taking from investors, even if the environment generally appears to be improving,” said Tetsu Emori, a fund manager with Astramax Co. in Tokyo.

“I’d expect all concerned parties to eventually strike a deal because it is in nobody’s interest if Greece defaults. But a further delay in the debt talks will really hamper sentiment,” he said.

After resisting terms of a proposed new bailout deal which demands strict labor reforms and other austerity steps, Greek political leaders face crunch talks on Tuesday to clinch an agreement needed to avoid a debt default.

The full package must be approved by the euro zone, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund before February 15 in order to complete legal procedures for a bond swap deal for a March 20 bond redemption.

Moreover, some euro zone countries require parliamentary approval to raise the bailout money.

The euro eased 0.2 percent to $ 1.3110, having recovered from an overnight low of $ 1.3026.

The dollar was up 0.3 percent against the yen at 76.72. Data from Japan’s Finance Ministry on Tuesday confirmed that Tokyo conducted stealth foreign exchange intervention in October-December, even after a massive intervention on October 31 when the yen hit a record high around 75.31.

The Australian dollar jumped more than one cent to a six-month high $ 1.0812 from after the Reserve Bank of Australia unexpectedly kept interest rates steady at 4.25 percent at a policy review released at 10:30 p.m. EST.

Market players had expected a 25 basis point cut due to global growth concerns and a benign inflation environment.

Australian shares fell 0.4 percent, turning negative from being up 0.1 percent just before the rate announcement.

Commodities stabilized after falling the day before when the dollar firmed.

U.S. crude futures inched up above $ 97 a barrel after falling nearly $ 1 on Monday, while Brent extended gains to above $ 116 a barrel, supported by increased demand for heating fuel due to cold weather in Europe and persistent supply concerns.

Spot gold was up 0.2 percent to $ 1,723 an ounce, helped by a modest recovery in equities.

But Asian credit markets remained subdued, with the spreads on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment grade index little changed, after tightening sharply on Monday.

Analysts expect consolidation in several markets which have recently climbed to near resistance levels, which may then pave the way for a break higher.

India’s main 30-share BSE index is expected to find major resistance at 17,908, a high in October, after rising as high as 17,829 on Monday.

Shanghai shares need to break above 2,360 for an eventual move higher, while a fall below 2,240-50 will reset the downtrend. The shares fell 1.4 percent to 2,297 on Tuesday.

Emori said gold and oil have more upside scope than other assets.

Interbank lending rates in Europe continued to improve despite the Greece issue, largely due to the ECB’s generous funding in December and expectations ahead of another such liquidity operation scheduled for later this month.

Three-month Euribor rates, traditionally the main gauge of unsecured interbank euro lending and a mix of interest rate expectations and banks’ appetite for lending, fell on Monday to 1.094 percent from 1.102 percent, hitting the lowest level since late February last year.

Back in 2007 I wrote this article about giving with a click and I think that an update is necessary. There are more opportunities for giving. These include hunger, breast cancer, animals, veterans, autism, child health, literacy, and the rain forest. At this point I would like to submit my article again so here it is with a few changes:

There are millions of animals that live in shelters and sanctuaries. These charities operate with your help. Make a donation of food by simply clicking a link. This is at no cost to you. The animal rescue site has made this available. At this site you can also help preserve the rainforest and the endangered habitat, improve literacy throughout the world by giving free books, help fund child healthcare around the world, provide free mammograms to women, and help feed the hungry around the world.

You can do this by simply going to The Animal Rescue Site http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com. You will have access to all the above charities. The site has improved greatly. It used to be that after clicking on one site, you had to scroll down and find the next place you wanted to go. This has been made much easier. Now after clicking at one site, there are tabs up top that you can see without having to scroll down the page. You simply click on the next tab and you are brought to the next site. You do not HAVE to click on all the sites if you do not want to do so. At the animal rescue site there are animal rescue stories, submit your story, pet care, and about our program.

The autism site is located here and it lets people know what autism is and has resources for families. The veterans site is here and you can click to learn about veterans or send a free e-card. You can also fund meals and share stories.

The rainforest site can be found at this site,. Here you will find talks about your environmental impact. It has the green ribbon pledge, teacher resources, ecology fund, take action center, and about the program.

Literacy information is found here to tell the reader about literacy, teacher resources, family resources, and about the program.

The healthcare site is available. It can be found here. You can go here to learn about the program.

The breast cancer site has tabs along the side (as do the other sites). Included in these tabs are about our project, take action, stories of hope, the mom blog, and games that give.

Last but not least, the hunger site has information on hunger in the U.S. and is found here, The Breast Cancer site . It has information on world hunger, save Darfur, our story, teacher resources, and about our program.
Once you register, you can request an email reminder be sent to you. In this email is a link to the site. This makes it extremely easy to access the site as all you have to do is click their link. All these sites have stores with jewelry, clothing, and accessories. You may shop at them to further contribute to these charities. You can send e-cards to further support these causes. So while you may not have the funds to give to all the charities that you would like to, the site click to give@… makes it possible to give. There is also information on how this site works, how you’re helping, and other ways to show your support.

In what travel situations do you lie? I’ve lied going through customs.

When and where were you last happiest? I’m quite happy generally.

What is your most treasured take-along? It’s got to be my shirts.

What is your travel motto? I don’t have one, like, ‘pack light.’ I pack what I need. Everything is counted out for the amount of days, right down to the amount of pills.

People have weird attitudes about money. I mean, none of us really wants to admit we don’t have any. We certainly don’t want to admit we have money problems. That’s a taboo.

Of course, our relatives and closest friends know. These are the lucky ones from whom we borrow and never repay.

But money is in our face all the time. The little stock market ticker runs across the screens on the TV. Various “advisers” are on TV promoting ways to make money. The airwaves are filled with money talk shows. All these funds to invest in, all this advice — it’s wasted on me and others like me.

There’s a significant portion of those in this country, like myself who are clueless about money and investing. I once heard that the “average” American has less than $ 500 saved. That was comforting to me.

So, I’m here to come out of the closet, lacking in designer clothes, as it were, to identify with all those like me who live paycheck to paycheck, (if we even make it that far) and don’t really think about the future because we can’t — we’re too worried about the here and now.

I’m worried about the priorities — necessities such having my hair cut and colored; my nails done, gourmet cat food for the kitties. Keeping the cable and phone and the Internet going ranks high. Then I have to think about paying the rent.

I wouldn’t know a mutual fund from a money market account if it rolled over into an IRA and hit me in the head. And frankly, I don’t care.

The only thing I know about anything rolled over is coins when I take them to the bank:

“Can I cash in these rolled coins or do I have to deposit them?”

“Do you have an account here?” the teller asks, eyeing me suspiciously.

“Yes, here’s my bank card.”

I pray she doesn’t check my balance and pray even harder it isn’t negative.

Many of you readers out there cannot relate to this; however, you probably have a relative lurking nearby who can. So, you can stop reading now if you have never: 1) received a collection letter in the mail; 2) been harassed by bill collectors by phone; 3) received shut-off notices for your utilities; 4) written out checks at the grocery store with no money in your account; 5) called and begged customer service to keep your utilities or cable/phone on a little longer; 6) contemplated changing your name and running off to a remote island.

See, for people like us, everyday life is a challenge. We find creative ways to survive in a world that costs too much and cares too little.

Personally, I am the Queen of Payment Arrangements, so astute and accomplished at postponing bill payments that I have developed it into an art form. I’m thinking of writing a book, the first “how to” in preventing utility shut-offs.

How do you know when you’re fiscally challenged? Here are some sure signs of trouble:

Your kids know more about money, the household bills, and the prices of things than their friends.

At the library, you can’t pay your late fee because you didn’t have $ 1.30.

You put $ 2 in your gas tank.

Your child pays for a school lunch with pennies.

You take a loan from one of those cash-advance places that charges 453 percent interest.

There’s $ 1.23 in your account, and you use your debit card at the grocery store.

You call the credit card company to see if your payment was received so you can run out and use the card again.

You dig through the car seats, sofa and winter jackets for change and are thrilled when you find 63 cents.

Got a roof over your head? You’ll be just fine. Think of it as learning experience and be thankful for what you do have.

It is noteworthy that the digital age has simplified lives beyond description and made the world a smaller place; however, it is also a great distraction to kids and adults alike. If rules were an important part of child discipline from the ancient times, in today’s digital age, they have become quite a necessity. But then there’s this other thing about rules, making them stick!

Being Objective and Rational about Setting Rules
It is human psychology (perhaps curiosity of what the consequences will be) to wonder what happens if we do something we’re not supposed to. The first thing that comes to a child’s mind when you instruct them not to do something is, “why not?”! Why is it forbidden, what is the big deal? Remember this basic psychology while setting house rules, especially for kids. Any prohibition without explaining the reasons behind it will only lead to building up of the curiosity and eventually flouting the rule. Allay the suspense about the consequences of flouting the rules. Explain why the rule exists in the first place. The child needs to see the consequence as a result of his/her own actions.

Strategy to Build House Rules
Now let us build out a strategy for coming up with clear and unambiguous rules that will stick. At the core of this strategy should be the objective, that house rules must be meant to promote togetherness and an atmosphere of peace and order. From a discipline standpoint, rules should serve more as standards and not punishments. The idea behind setting any rule must be to encourage children to develop a sense of responsibility. Children need to make sense of the rules such that they follow it on their own, even when you’re not watching. Rules should NOT serve as virtual leashes to hold back children from anything! If you do that, the harder you pull the leash, Newton’s law of motion will ensure an equal but opposite reaction.

The Fewer, the Better: Refrain from writing a rule book. You know what happens to those books, they’re pretty useless unless you’re arguing in a court of law or running a redemption center for convicted felons. Having a rule in place for every imaginable circumstance in the house, is a recipe for disaster. Keep them simple and more importantly, keep them few. Keep in mind your child’s maturity level and the values you want to pass on to him/her as the foundation for your rules. If you’re a single parent, or living with a partner who’s not related to the kids (stepfather or stepmother), if the kid has siblings or if he/she has special needs, all these “special” situations will make your rules unique to your family. Select the most important matters to make rules about.

Get Rid of “Because I said so” and “For your own good”: If you want your kids to stick to the rules, involve them in setting them up. Yes, let’s leave babies and toddlers out of this of course, but as soon as children begin to understand things around them, make them participate in the discussion about setting up rules. If you have allotted an hour every day for watching television, explain to the child why you think it’s a proper duration. Tell them what they’d have to do for the rest of the time. Allotting time for homework, playing with friends, etc., must be done with the child’s participation. This will not only make the child familiar with the rules but also make them aware that you’re taking into consideration his/her needs. A participative process will automatically lead the child to think that he/she has a say in your scheme of things. You can also explain the need to have a particular rule and the consequences of flouting the rule, during this discussion. The rules will then become more effective.

Write it Down, Put it Up, Stick it On: Once the list of rules (as small a list as possible) is ready, make an artwork out of it and ensure that the kids get to see it easily while going about the house. Enlisting their help in making a poster out of it or hanging it up behind the door to their room will convey the “fun element” about rules while clearly communicating the seriousness about sticking to them. Revise or revisit the rules whenever needed, not very frequently though. After a few months, when you see that the kids are taking to certain rules quite easily and without supervision, you may compliment them for it and remove that rule from the list. You just need to emphasize that while you’re proud that the rule needs no reminding, it is still an unwritten rule. These actions will enable the kids to place you in their circle of trust and they’re more likely to continue following the rules without constant supervision.

Do Not Underestimate the Power of Positive Reinforcement: Has it ever happened that you have been driving your car safely for several years without breaking any laws and the one fateful day that things go wrong and you inadvertently make that small error, you’re pulled up and treated like a regular offender? You would perhaps say to yourself, “so much for not making a single mistake all these years!”. How great it would be if someone lauded us for sticking to the rules just as enthusiastically as they would punish the act of flouting. Well, while that may or may not happen with traffic rules, at home you can be the harbinger of change. Observe your kid’s good behavior as intently as you look for goof ups. Recognize their efforts at regularly sticking to the rules. Be generous in advertising their good behavior in front of your spouse and/or other relatives.

Set an Example, Watch Yourself: It is a common occurrence that parents who set rules about obedience and respect openly misbehave with their own elderly parents or even strangers. Children exposed to such ambiguity have no second thoughts about flouting the rules. If you have a rule about not shouting or yelling stuck on your child’s study room soft board, you need to ensure that some errant driver sliding into your lane while driving does not make your child witness your nasty road rage. If you’re inconsistent in your own behavior, be prepared for a power struggle, especially with preteens and teenaged children.

Teach your Child that Freedom Comes with Responsibility: Enforcement of rules is possible only if there are distinct consequences to flouting them. Ensure that your kids understand that the consequence is the price they have to pay for flouting the rules. Do not position the consequence as a “punishment”. Keeping the rules positive means, not following the rule will result in a minor or major inconvenience. Just like you’d get a speeding ticket for speeding over limits in traffic, let the consequences be clear and non-violent but adequately inconvenient to the kid. Ensure to communicate the consequences well in advance and start with warnings before strictly enforcing the rules. Everyone needs a “warm up”. Remove “harshness” or “negativity” as much as possible. Also, tone down or tone up the inconveniences based on the kids’ reactions to them. Ensure that none of your consequences for flouting the rules border on abusive parenting. For example, take off that rule that says – “if you don’t get home by 11 at night, make arrangements to stay elsewhere until morning”. For younger kids, do not have a rule that says; “if they don’t eat their vegetables, they’ll have to stay hungry”. There can be no positive learning from these kinds of flaming threats. Let helping with minor household chores or cleaning up their own room, etc., serve as consequences for disobeying rules.

Some Best Practices
A lot of young kids understand better when rules are laid out in a “Dos and Don’ts” fashion. Be tuned in to your kid’s reactions to the rules and consequences. If the kid is unable to make sense of the rules or thinks that the consequences are unfair, have a discussion with him/her without being condescending. If you have more than one kid around the house, make sure that most of your rules stay the same for all of them. If you have a teenaged kid with a curfew limitation that exceeds the younger child, explain why it is so. The aim of having rules is to promote harmony within the family, nobody should feel left out. Trust your kid and do not indulge in excessive monitoring of his/her activities. Don’t come across as someone who’s waiting for the kid to make a mistake! Don’t keep on nagging the kid and reminding the rules at all times. Avoid never-ending, unachievable consequences, don’t make the situation hopeless for the child. Another common mistake parents often tend to make is to hold a lasting grudge for certain actions by the child; for example, giving the child the silent treatment lasting several weeks for an act of misbehavior that occurred some time in the past. This is highly ineffective in correcting the misbehavior. Make sure that the result corresponds to the act of flouting the rule. Don’t blanket the consequence over everything else that the child does!

The key to making rules work is constant positive reinforcement and ensuring that the child is not left alone to deal with the harsh consequences of his/her actions. The aim of having rules is to steer the child towards self-discipline and civil behavior. Teaching the child to behave within the domain of reasonable boundaries needs patient effort. Establishing rules can be very helpful in the process of disciplining children. However, as with all fruits of labor, this one will be sweet and worth all the trouble. With these tips on how to make house rules that stick, hope you can coach your child to become a responsible and independent human being.

If you are in the New Mexico area you need to check out http://www.direct.tv/direct-tv/New-Mexico/A/direct-tv-Albuquerque/ for some great package options for satellite television in your area. Once you are all set up and have your dish then I would suggest that you search the guide immediately for Scrubs and start watching as many as you can in rapid succession. I love this show so much I just can’t adequately express it in a blog. First of all Zach Braff, need I really say more about that? He is adorable, a little nerdy, and hilarious all rolled in to one. What is not to like about him? Then you have Donald Faison’s character that is funny in a different way. He is always running around trying to please his girlfriend who also happens to work at the same hospital that they do. Another character that I like is Dr. Cox. He is a no frills, straight to the point kind of guy and we are honest enjoys making people feel stupid at the same time. Watch it, you won’t regret it!

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (AP) — Rick Santorum is tired, almost broke — and going home.

The former Pennsylvania senator is taking a pause from Florida campaigning just days before the Tuesday primary that even he expects to deal him a third consecutive loss.

Santorum says he would rather spend his Saturday sitting at his kitchen table doing his taxes than campaigning in a state where the race for the Republican presidential nomination has become a two-man fight between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney .

The cash-strapped candidate acknowledges that he simply can’t keep up with the GOP front-runners in Florida.

“We’re going to talk about the Constitution and talk about being a strong conservative,” Santorum said at an event here this week. “And that’s all we can do.”

Outside advisers are urging him to pack up in Florida completely and not spend another minute in a state where he is cruising toward a loss. But Santorum insisted on Friday that he would return once he has readied his taxes for public release.

“I’m coming back within 24 hours, and I’m here through up to election day,” Santorum told Fox News. “I’ve spent every minute here in Florida, and I’m going to work in Florida.”

Santorum has yet to announce his schedule for Florida’s primary day. He says it was a mistake for him to remain in South Carolina on its voting day.

“We can’t let grass grow,” he told reporters Thursday. “South Carolina Election Day was sort of a wasted day for us.”

He pledged to continue his campaign regardless of the Florida outcome.

It’s a grim period for Santorum, who just three weeks ago was riding high on a strong finish in the Iowa caucuses; after first saying the result was a virtual tie with Romney, the Iowa GOP ultimately declared Santorum the winner. The victory was short-lived. He lost big in both New Hampshire and South Carolina.

He faced an uphill battle even before the race turned to Florida. He doesn’t have the money to spend on television ads in Florida’s expensive media markets. He couldn’t compete with the thousands-strong crowds his rivals have been drawing. And he wasn’t able to find a moment here that crystalized the rationale for his candidacy.

“Other candidates tell you they need your help,” Santorum told Florida Republicans this week, almost pleading. “They’re lying. I really need your help.”

But help didn’t come — at least in this state — for a candidate who is visibly exhausted and running on, at most, four hours of sleep each night.

So Santorum is going home to Pennsylvania, which he represented in the Senate, and Virginia, where he lives with his wife and seven children, to get some rest and, he says, prepare his own taxes. He also plans fundraisers in both states as he works to rebuild his campaign account to pay for upcoming contests in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado.

Santorum also is looking at Arizona and Michigan, states that vote at the end of February — if he makes it that far.

His inner circle of advisers is looking at the campaign checkbook. They say they can keep a lean campaign rolling in case Gingrich or Romney implode.

“This race is just starting. It’s a three-man race,” Santorum insists. “We’re going to be in this race for the long term.”

For now, at least, polls show Santorum dramatically trailing in Florida, the largest and most diverse state in the early nominating schedule. And he seems to be coming up short as he tries to win over voters with his everyman persona.

“I wish he had a little more passion in the belly,” said Don Waldt, a Punta Gorda retiree who attended a Santorum rally at dusk this week. “He is conservative and authentic. But he isn’t on top and doesn’t seem to have a clear path to the top.”
